Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has introduced a centralized Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system called “Maktab” to modernize the country’s higher education sector. The system has been successfully rolled out in 25 universities, with plans underway to expand it across the country. This initiative is aimed at creating a fully digital academic environment that improves efficiency, transparency, and service delivery for students and institutions.
The launch of the Maktab system was highlighted during a live press conference by Ms. Wajiha Qamar, Minister of State for the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training. She stated that Pakistan’s higher education system is steadily moving toward digital transformation, where technology plays a central role in improving academic management and student services.
What Is the HEC Maktab ERP System?
Maktab is a cloud-based education management platform developed under the HEC framework. It digitizes the entire student lifecycle, starting from admission and enrollment and continuing through examinations and degree issuance. By bringing all academic and administrative processes onto a single platform, the system helps reduce paperwork, human errors, and delays that often affect universities and students.
The system allows universities to track the complete academic journey of students in real time. Faculty records, course management, examination data, and degree processing can all be handled through one integrated platform. This not only improves operational efficiency but also ensures consistency and accuracy of academic records across institutions.
The concept of Maktab is inspired by the legacy of Islamic education, where learning centers played a key role in knowledge sharing. HEC has reimagined this concept by introducing a modern, digital version that meets today’s academic needs. The cloud-based nature of the system makes it scalable and sustainable, allowing more universities to join without heavy infrastructure costs.
A major development announced alongside the Maktab system is the introduction of blockchain-based degree verification. This technology will make academic degrees secure, tamper-proof, and easily verifiable at the national and international levels. It is expected to simplify degree verification for graduates and employers while enhancing Pakistan’s credibility in global education systems.
