The fort dates back to the late 16th century, constructed by Ali Sher Khan Anchan, a prominent ruler of the Maqpon dynasty. Nearby lies the Mendoq Khar palace of his Ladakhi queen, Mandok Gyalmo. For centuries, it remained the center of Maqpon rule until the 19th century, when the last ruler Ahmad Shah was defeated by the Dogra forces led by Zorawar Singh.
